Lee & Me
Wollongong isn't a place I visit often, so when I heard we were going to Berry via the coastal drive for the long weekend, I thought why not have brekkie somewhere in the Gong. And after some research,
we...well I, decided to go to Lee & Me.
Located on main street, L&M is altogether charming, home but not home - I guess the best way to describe it is that it's comparable to the ace cafes you'd find in Surry Hills. In addition to the cafe, they also have an in house boutique upstairs stocking the likes of Vanishing Elephant and Rollás.
Now, the menu. Expect simple, seasonal and modern Australian breakfast fare, but to be honest..it's a little over priced. Whenever I'm in doubt on what to order, I always ask for staff recommendations. Since my boyfriend is generally always sold with anything that has scrambled eggs, it was between the malt hotcakes (w/ roasted rhubarb, sweet ricotta, pecan & pistachio praline with maple syrup) OR the hash (smoked pork hock & sweet potato hash w/corn cobb salad, onion rings, chilli jam & fried eggs).
Too early for a salad & onion rings, I indulged in the malt hotcakes.
At first glance the hotcakes appear to be pretty ordinary, with rhubarb sludge and drenched in maple but tasting it is something else. It just worked - proving that sometimes looks can be deceiving. I haven't had hotcakes as delicious as these in a while. Thick malty cakes, tangy & sweet rhubarb, nuts for texture and the sweet ricotta helped to mellow everything out. I personally like having control of how much maple syrup goes on my hotcakes so I was surprised with the amount and how it wasn't intensely sweet.
If only it wasn't so far away I'd return for the hotcakes alone. Overall a good first experience and newfound respect for the Gong.
Vibe: hip; the place to be
Try: dem malt hotcakes ($15)
